Understanding the Prostate
As men age, their prostate tends to get larger in size. This can result in the medical diagnosis known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The prostate may grow large enough to inhibit or slow the flow of urine in many men. This is a result of the prostate increasing in size and putting pressure on the urethra.
What is BPH?
BPH is benign prostatic hyperplasia or prostate enlargement. Close to 30 million men in the United States suffer from this condition and it is estimated that over 50% of men have BPH by the time they reach the age of 50. At age 80, almost every man may have some degree of BPH.
What causes
BPH?
The prostate gland will increase in size because of certain hormonal changes and possible nutritional deficiencies in the body.
What is
the Treatment for BPH?
A surgical procedure known as a TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate) is done to remove some of the prostate tissue and take the pressure off the urethra. This procedure usually results increased opening for the flow of urine.
Prostrate
Cancer
Cells in the body normally follow an organized pattern of new cells replacing old or dieing cells. When abnormal cells interrupt the normal cell sequence, cells can grow rapidly in an unorganized manner, resulting in a tumor or cancer. Unfortunately, this is not uncommon in the prostate and early stage prostate cancer causes very few symptoms. As prostate cancer progresses, it may interrupt urination by pressing on the urethra. Although we do not know the cause of prostate cancer, we do know that the earlier it is detected the better the prognosis.
What can men
do to help their prostate health?
The best prevention for prostate problems is an early aggressive strategy, which includes regularly scheduled health care exams, decreasing the amount of red meat in your diet, a regular exercise program and preventative prostate supplementation.
Make sure to schedule regular exams with your health care practioner and let them know if you have noticed a change in urine flow or any other prostate health symptoms you may be having.
